The HC-SR501 PIR Motion Sensor Module is a compact and highly reliable motion detection solution based on Passive Infrared (PIR) technology. It is widely used in security systems, automatic lighting, smart home automation, and energy-saving applications. This sensor is designed to detect infrared radiation emitted by the human body and responds whenever a change in heat pattern occurs within its detection range.

Unlike active sensors, the HC-SR501 does not emit any signal. It passively monitors infrared radiation in its surroundings through its built-in pyroelectric sensor. When a human or warm object moves across its field of view, the sensor detects the variation in infrared levels and generates a digital HIGH output signal. After a preset delay period, the output automatically returns to LOW if no further motion is detected.

The module consists of a pyroelectric infrared sensor, signal conditioning circuitry, and a dome-shaped Fresnel lens that enhances the detection coverage. The Fresnel lens helps focus infrared signals from a wider area onto the sensing element, enabling a detection angle of up to 120 degrees and a range of up to approximately 7 meters, depending on environmental conditions and sensitivity settings.

The HC-SR501 operates within a voltage range of 5V to 20V DC and provides a 3.3V digital output signal, making it compatible with most microcontrollers and development platforms including Arduino, Raspberry Pi, AVR, PIC, 8051, ESP8266, and ESP32. The module includes onboard delay and sensitivity adjustment potentiometers, allowing users to fine-tune both detection distance and output hold time. The delay time can be adjusted from a few seconds to several minutes.

It also features two trigger modes selectable via a jumper. In repeatable mode, the output remains HIGH as long as motion continues to be detected. In non-repeatable mode, the output goes HIGH once and remains active for the preset delay time regardless of continued motion.

After powering the module, it typically requires a short warm-up period of around 30 to 60 seconds to stabilize and calibrate to the surrounding environment. For optimal performance, it should be installed away from direct sunlight, air conditioners, heaters, or rapidly changing heat sources.

The HC-SR501 PIR Motion Sensor Module is an ideal choice for motion-activated lighting systems, intrusion detection, automatic doors, IoT-based monitoring systems, and industrial automation projects. Its affordability, ease of integration, adjustable parameters, and dependable performance make it suitable for both beginners and advanced electronics developers.
