The MPLAB PICkit 5 is an official in-circuit debugger and programmer from Microchip, designed to support modern PIC, dsPIC, AVR, SAM, and Arm Cortex-based microcontrollers and microprocessors. It is a powerful yet easy-to-use development tool that works seamlessly with the MPLAB X Integrated Development Environment (IDE), providing a graphical interface for debugging and programming.

The PICkit 5 supports multiple device families including PIC and AVR microcontrollers, dsPIC Digital Signal Controllers, SAM (Arm Cortex-based) MCUs and MPUs, and CEC Arm Cortex-based MCUs. It offers improved Programmer-to-Go (PTG) functionality, allowing standalone programming without a PC. Using the MPLAB PTG mobile app, you can connect to the PICkit 5 via Bluetooth, browse program images stored on the microSD card, and program target devices directly from your smartphone.

The debugger supports multiple communication interfaces such as JTAG, Serial Wire Debug (SWD), ICSP, AVR programming interfaces, and UART Virtual COM Port (VCP). It uses an eight-pin single in-line header, and an adapter board enables compatibility with standard connectors for various protocols.

With a USB Type-C connection, the PICkit 5 provides stable high-speed USB 2.0 communication. It can supply up to 150 mA to the target device or operate in self-powered mode from the target (2.7V to 5V). Programming can be initiated either from the mobile app or by pressing the logo button on the device.

The PICkit 5 is compatible with Windows, Linux, and macOS operating systems, making it suitable for professional embedded development, prototyping, firmware programming, and production programming tasks.
