The ACS712 5A Current Sensor Module is a compact and reliable solution for measuring both AC and DC current in electronic circuits. It is based on the Allegro Hall-effect current sensor IC, which provides accurate, low-noise, and electrically isolated current sensing for a wide range of applications.

At the core of the module is a precision, low-offset linear Hall-effect sensor integrated with a copper conduction path. When current flows through this copper path, it generates a magnetic field proportional to the current. The internal Hall IC detects this magnetic field and converts it into a corresponding analog voltage output. Because the sensing element is isolated from the current path, it offers good electrical isolation and improved safety compared to traditional shunt resistor methods.

The 5A version of the ACS712 is capable of measuring currents from –5A to +5A. It can detect both AC and DC currents, making it suitable for versatile applications such as motor monitoring, power management systems, battery chargers, switching mode power supplies, over-current protection circuits, digital watt meters, and programmable current sources.

The module typically operates at 5V supply voltage and provides an analog output centered around 2.5V when no current is flowing. As current increases in the positive direction, the output voltage rises above 2.5V. When current flows in the opposite direction, the output voltage decreases below 2.5V. For the 5A variant, the sensitivity is commonly around 185 mV per ampere, allowing precise current measurements using the analog input of microcontrollers such as Arduino, ESP8266, ESP32, AVR, PIC, or other development boards.

The module usually includes screw terminals for easy connection of the load current path and header pins for interfacing with a microcontroller. Since the output is analog, it can be directly connected to the analog input (ADC) of platforms like Arduino for real-time current monitoring.

Because it uses Hall-effect sensing, the ACS712 introduces minimal power loss and does not significantly heat up under normal operating conditions. However, for accurate readings, proper calibration in software is recommended, especially when measuring small currents or when working in noisy environments.

The ACS712 5A Current Sensor Module is an ideal choice for embedded systems, IoT energy monitoring, robotics, battery management systems, and DIY electronics projects where safe, non-intrusive current measurement is required.
